Apprenticeship


How does the program work? 

 

TNN Beauty Barber, Cosmetology of Southern California Unilateral of Apprenticeship and Training Center  is the approved Program Sponsor and also a Training Center for 39 Hours Pre-Apprenticeship, Related Subject Instruction (RSI) for Barbering (250 hrs), Cosmetology (320 hrs), and Makeup Artistry (250 hrs), and to indenture students for the 3200 hours of On-the-Job training (2 years) in barber shops and salons.  After completion of the above requirements, the apprentice is able to apply for taking the state board exam to receive the professional license of their field.

 

1.  39 Hours Pre-Apprenticeship

5 days - Wed, Thurs, Friday.  Class from 9 am - 5:30 pm 

Class start every other Wednesday

June 7 & 21, July 5 & 19, August 9 & 23, Sept. 6 & 20, October 4 & 18, November 8 & 22, December 6 & 20, 2017

Upon completion of this part of the training, the application will be file to the state board for the Apprentice License for Barbering or Cosmetology.  The license will be sent to the establishment.  Once the apprentice receive this license, that is when the On-the-Job training begin....starting of the 3200 hours in the shop.

 

While On-the Job training in the shop, on assigned day, student is to go to RSI class for additional training.

 

2.  RSI Classes

RSI classes are theory training on the following chapters using Milady textbook, students are to complete the answers in the workbooks prior to coming to class.  Each chapter will be review a written exam will be given; 75% is passing score.  Each day, the student will also be learning how to do hands-on practical of each procedure that is tested at the state board practical exam.  

 

RSI Barbering:  250 hours (32 Tuesdays) 9 am - 5:30 pm with a 30 minutes lunch break.

MOCK BOARD:  At the end of the program, the apprentice will have the opportunity to practice taking the mock board of the practical exam to prepare for the State Board exam one month prior to the test date.

 

BARBER STYLING PRACTICAL EXAMINATION:  Student is to bring to class the State Board Practical Kit (included in the class fee) to practice in RSI class.

3. Shaving with a Straight Razor (Untimed)

4. Basic Facial (10 minutes)

5. Blow Dry Styling (15 minutes)

6. Thermal Curling (10 minutes)

7. Chemical Waving (20 minutes)

8. Virgin Hair Lightening and Hair Color Retouch (20 minutes, Two 10-minute segments)

9. Chemical Relaxing, Virgin and Retouch (20 minutes, Two 10-minute segments) 

 

RSI Cosmetology:  320 hours (40 Mondays) 9 am - 5:30 pm with a 30 minutes lunch break.

6. Predisposition Test and Strand Test with Simulated Product (10 minutes)

7. Highlighting with Foil, Virgin Application with Colored Simulated Product (15 minutes)

8. Hair Color Retouch with Colored Simulated Product (10 minutes)

9. Virgin Hair Relaxer Application with Colored Simulated Product (Untimed)

10. Blood Exposure Procedure (10 minutes)

14. Basic Facial (20 minutes)

15. Sculptured Nail (20 minutes)

  

RSI Makeup Artistry:  250 hours

16 weeks: Monday - Thursday, 6 pm - 10 pm with a 15 minutes break.

Make-up Artistry course is a non-license program.  Hands on workshop; student is to learn skills in the field of makeup artistry to apply toward the application of everyday makeup, airbrush makeup and permanent makeup.

After the receiving the Apprentice License from the board, the student can start their On-the-Job training for 32 - 40 hours a week of working in the shop.

 

3.  3200 hours On-the-Job Training - BARBER SHOP OR SALON  

The apprentice is to be employed in the shop; where the apprentice is working and getting the guidance from a licensed trainer.   The apprentice is allowed to work minimum of 32 hours up to 40 hours a week.  The employer is to pay the apprentice minimum wage and a Workman Comp Certificate is required. 

 

Upon completion of the program, apprentice will be issued a "Certificate of Completion" by the State of California Department of Industrial Relations.  You will also receive the Certificate of Completion  to apply for the State Board license for Barbering and Cosmetology.

APPRENTICE STEPS

  1. Select your occupation.
  2. Find employment in a shop to do OJT hours with a trainer.
  3. Register for 39 hours Pre-Apprenticeship class
  4. Pay the fee.  Pay in full and receive 10% off total class fee.

EMPLOYER STEPS

  1. Have a trainer available to take on an apprentice.
  2. Employ your apprentice minimum of 32 hours a week.
  3. Provide Program Sponsor a check stub & Workman Comp Certificate.
  4. Sign all documents required.
  5. Have the option to come to the Committee meeting.
